Wood Science and Technology

Fruitful scientific research has been carried out in the fields of wood structure, wood physics and drying, wood mechanical properties, wood chemistry and adhesives, and wood cell wall principal component aggregate structure.


Research on Wood functional properties


In terms of wood structure, research has been focused on the identification of wood species and wood products, the quality detection and evaluation of waterlogged archaeological wood, the DNA barcodes for wood accurate identification, and the intelligent and rapid identification based on wood images. The information mining and utilization of wood specimen resources has also been strengthened, to provide high-quality resources for scientific and technological progress and economic development in China. Relevant achievements have been applied to the protection and utilization of important wooden cultural relics, such as buildings in the Forbidden City. The digital wood collection of Chinese Academy of Forestry and the first Archaeological Wood Specimen Library are also established, and was selected as CITES Laboratory that Conduct Wildlife Forensic Testing.

Breakthroughs have been made in the basic wood physical properties, the relationship between wood and moisture, the efficient wood drying technology, and the enhancement technology of wood sandwich compression formation. Research results have been widely used in solid wood flooring, furniture, musical instruments and wood drying industry, providing technical support for improving the properties of wood products.


In view of wood cell wall mechanics, biomechanics and wood macro mechanics, researches on testing technology of wood mechanical properties in different application directions and others have been carried out. A series of new technologies have been developed, such as application safety evaluation technology of wood (bamboo) structural, and rapid assessment of wood components on historic building. In addition, a series of wood (bamboo) engineering products have also be invented, such as specification wood, Glue-laminated timber (GLT), Cross-laminated timber (CLT) and etc. Relevant results were applied on the Beijing Winter Olympic Bobsleigh Center.

In the aspect of chemical basis of wood processing, wood constituents and utilization as well as environmental protection adhesives, quality evaluation technology of agarwood series products has been developed, and the natural extract antibacterial and antiviral functional additives, sleep aid products with natural extract fragrance, formaldehyde-free soybean meal adhesives and other products have been developed to provide technical support for the development of green and healthy homes in China.


Based on supramolecular chemistry and the theory of polymerization assembly, the quantitative information of binding energy, molecular interaction and groups’ activity, and their structure-activity relationship with wood properties are revealed. The preparation technology of wood aerogel material, solid electrolyte interface film for lithium battery and biomass electrode material have been developed.

A complete technical system covering products, manufacturing processes, key equipment, performance testing and component units has been formed in the field of wood (bamboo) reconstituted materials, formaldehyde-free wood-based panels, and the integrated utilization of crop-straw and waste wood. Wood steel, bamboo steel, formaldehyde-free solid wood composite board, crop-straw based artificial board and other products are studied and developed. Among them, the restructured material is included in the National Development and Reform Commission's key energy-saving low-carbon technology promotion catalog and green technology promotion catalog, which is an important solution to achieve carbon reduction and carbon sequestration. And it is also applied to some important national construction projects such as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

The application of bamboo-based fiber composites on the blade of 1.5-MW wind turbine


Focused on the basic theory and structural design of wood composite materials, the manufacturing technology of light-weight and high-strength wood-based panel and composite materials, formaldehyde-free thermoplastic resin plywood and products, as well as the molded composite material manufacturing technology have been developed. Products such as car doors, handlebars and seat backs are tested in BMW, FAW and other companies. Relevant results have also been tried out in the high-speed train in China.

In regard to the wood functional materials, researches have been carried out on the preparation technology of fire retardant wood materials, electrothermal wood materials and products, and high-performance ecological board, so as to realize the value-added utilization of wood materials. Relevant results are widely used in furniture, flooring, cabinet, fire door and other fields, and promoted in Zhejiang, Shandong, Guangxi, Hebei and other provinces.


In view of the performance requirements of anti-corrosion, insect-proof, fire-retardant and modification, the application and evaluation of wood protection technologies are implemented to structure wood, and wood used in outdoor/field/wet areas. The preparation and application technology for wood preservative of triazole or Copper Azole, fire-retardant wood surface decoration materials, and the identification technology of insect-proof wood have been developed, which can provide technical support for the development of China's wood protection industry and the protection of historic buildings.


Based on the research of nano modification and dimensional stability treatment of wood, a multi-functional modification technology system for plantation wood is established. Breakthroughs in key technologies have been made, such as preparation of high penetration and high activity modifier. The defects of plantation wood, especially low strength and easy deformation, were overcome, resulting in the efficient, high-value and large-scale utilization of plantation wood. Plantation wood is innovatively applied to large spent nuclear fuel transport vessel, which expands the utilization of timber from domestic plantations.

Intelligent Manufacturing


A series of technologies and equipment such as manufacturing technology of wood doors and windows, energy-saving and timber-reduction sawing processing technology, coating materials for wood products, control and monitoring system of wood-based panel continuous press, production technology for smart home have been developed to provide technical support for China's wood processing industry to move towards to intelligent production.

To improve the mechanization level of forestry and grassland industry , the following technologies and equipment have been developed, including numerical control technology of wood processing, high-speed electric spindle manufacturing technology, multi-functional numerical control processing technology of wood and bamboo building components, appearance quality detection technology of wood and bamboo, bamboo cutting technology and equipment, forest fruit picking technology and equipment, multi-functional operation platform for hills and mountainous areas.
