Mr. Juan Ignacio Buffa, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries of Uruguay visited the Chinese Academy of Forestry

Collaboration in the field of forestry and grassland between China and Uruguay is exceptionally complementary and holds vast potential. Both parties hope to carry out cooperation and exchanges in the future in the fields of forestry management policy framework, natural forest restoration, improvement of plantation forest productivity, forest fire monitoring, wetland protection and etc.



On 15 June 2023, Juan Ignacio Buffa, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries of Uruguay and other four delegates visited the Chinese Academy of Forestry (CAF). Prof. Cui Lijuan, Vice President of CAF, hosted the meeting.


Prof. Cui Lijuan welcomed the delegation led by Mr. Juan Ignacio Buffa. After a short introduction of CAF, she briefly reviewed the history of forestry cooperation between China and Uruguay, and expressed her hope that both parties shall further leverage their respective strengths and characteristics to engage in mutual learning and implement practical cooperation. In the future, CAF will work with the International Cooperation Department of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration to establish a liaison mechanism with Uruguay, implement the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on forestry cooperation signed by China and Uruguay and the results of the ministerial talks, and promote effective achievements of cooperation.


Mr. Juan Ignacio Buffa pointed out that Uruguay was the first Latin American country to join the “Belt and Road” Initiative and attached great importance to cooperation with China. Forestry is an important economic pillar for Uruguay. He hopes to carry out cooperation and exchanges in the future in the fields of forestry management policy framework, natural forest restoration, plantation forest productivity improvement, forest fire monitoring, wetland protection and other fields.


Mr. Qu Haihua, director of the Second Bilateral Division of the International Cooperation Department of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration (NFGA), said that cooperation in the forestry and grassland fields between China and Uruguay is highly complementary and has huge potential. He hopes to further promote pragmatic cooperation in the forestry and grassland fields between China and Uruguay.


After the meeting, the Uruguayan delegation visited the Wood Collection of Chinese Academy of Forestry (WoodPedia).


Mr. Nicolás Chiesa, Director of the Farm Bureau of the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries of Uruguay, Mr. Martin Orlando, Deputy Chief of Mission and Minister Counselor of the Embassy of Uruguay in China, relevant officers from the Agricultural Division of the Embassy of Uruguay in China, and other personals from the Research Institute of Forestry, Research Institute of Wood Industry,Ecology and Nature Conservation Institute, Research Institute of Ecology Conservation and Restoration, General Office and the International Department of CAF attended the meeting.
