In the future, both sides will fully use the platform of the China-Arab International Research Center for Drought, Desertification, and Land Restoration to continuously promote practical cooperation in combating drought, desertification and land degradation.
on 23 May 2024, Mr. Ibrahim Thiaw, Under-Secretary-General of UN and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), paid a visit to the Chinese Academy of Forestry (CAF). Mr. Chen Shaozhi, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Forestry, received the delegation and hosted the meeting. Mr. Pan Bing, Deputy Director-General of Department of Combating Desertification of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration (NFGA), attended the meeting and delivered a speech.
The meeting briefly reviewed the consensus reached between the National Forestry and Grassland Administration and the Secretariat of United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification on further strengthening international cooperation in combating desertification and jointly preparing for the 16thConference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, as well as the cooperation between UNCCD Secretariate and Chinese Academy of Forestry. It is agreed that, in the future, the two sides will fully use the platform of the China-Arab International Research Center for Drought, Desertification, and Land Restoration to continuously promote practical cooperation in combating drought, desertification and land degradation.
The UNCCD Secretariat pointed out that the UNCCD is not only an environmental convention addressing desertification issues, but also a convention concerning the relationship between human society and the natural environment, a convention focusing on human well-being. China has made remarkable achievements in combating desertification; UNCCD Secretariat looks forward to deepening cooperation with CAF, facilitating technical exchanges, strengthening policy dialogues, and promoting China's successful experience and technology of combating desertification worldwide.
Mr. Wu Bo, Deputy Director of Institute of Ecological Conservation and Restoration, and Director of Institute of Desertification Studies of CAF, gave a presentation on UNCCD implementation and desertification combating in China. In addition, Mr. Xu Bin, Director of the Division of International Cooperation of CAF, briefly introduced the China-Arab International Research Center for Drought, Desertification, and Land Restoration and its workplan in the future.
After the meeting, Mr. Ibrahim Thiaw visited the Forest and Grass Virtual Reality and Visualization Simulation Laboratory in the Research Institute of Forest Resource Information Techniques of CAF.
Ms. Jia Xiaoxia, Programme Officer of the Committee on Science and Technology of the UNCCD Secretariat and Ms. Louisa Karika, Liaison Officer for Asian Area of the UNCCD Secretariat accompanied for the visiting. Officials from NFGA and experts from CAF also attended the meeting.
