
A total of 27 agricultural and forestry officials and technical experts from nine countries, including Cuba, East Timor, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Trinidad and Tobago, Fiji, Ethiopia, Malaysia and Turkey, participated in this 14-day seminar.
On 3 July 2024, the opening ceremony of the Seminar on Management of Forests Functioned as Water Conservation, Economic Growth, Grain Production, and Carbon Resources for Officials from Developing Countries, hosted by the Ministry of Commerce and organized by the China National Bamboo Research Center of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration (hereinafter referred to as the Bamboo Center), was held in Hangzhou. Ms. Araba Modupeola Adezandhe, Assistant Minister of the Nigerian Ministry of Environment and National Coordinator of the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization, delivered remarks as a representative of the trainees. Researcher Wu Tonggui, Deputy Director of the Bamboo Center, attended the ceremony and delivered speech.
Mr. Wu Tonggui emphasized that the theme of this workshop, namely “Management of Forests Functioned as Water Conservation, Economic Growth, Grain Production, and Carbon Resources”, is an innovative attempt of the Bamboo Center, and an important initiative to explore and establish the training brand of "telling good stories about forest and grassland science and technology, and promoting President Xi Jinping's thought on ecological civilization". General Secretary Xi Jinping put forward the important proposition of “Forests Functioned as Water Conservation, Economic Growth, Grain Production, and Carbon Resources”, which plays a fundamental and strategic role in promoting the construction of ecological civilization, practicing green development methods, and achieving the sustainable development of the country and the nation. It is also hoped that it can provide reference for sustainable development of forestry in the country of the participants. Mr. Wu Tonggui urged the participants to fully use the platform of this seminar, learn from each other, and promote new achievements in mutually beneficial cooperation in forestry in developing countries.
Ms. Araba Modupeola Adezandhe pointed out that, how to effectively manage forests to promote ecological, economic and social benefits and effectively respond to global climate change has become an urgent and major challenge currently faced by developing countries. She sincerely thanked the Chinese government for hosting this seminar and building a valuable platform for communication and discussion on key issues concerning the well-being of all mankind. At the same time, she encouraged the participants to make full use of this seminar to learn from each other, share best practices, deepen cooperation and exchanges, explore solutions, and work together to address global challenges.
The 14-day seminar attracted 27 agricultural and forestry officials and technical experts from nine countries, including Cuba, East Timor, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Trinidad and Tobago, Fiji, Ethiopia, Malaysia and Turkey. Reports were delivered and discussed with the theme of the role of forests in water conservation, economic growth, grain production and carbon resources. Field trips were conducted in Kaihua County in Zhejiang Province and Ningguo City in Anhui Province to systematically showcase China's current situation and experience of management of forest functioned as water conservation, economic growth, grain production, and carbon resources and share vivid practices and innovative cases.
