In June 2022, the Research Institute of Fast-Growing Trees of the Chinese Academy of Forestry (CAF) and the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI) of the University of Pretoria in South Africa signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Tree Protection, marking the official establishment of the China-South Africa Joint Forestry Research Center. FABI and CAF will cooperate to promote further research in forest protection, forest health in both countries, and continue to deepen cooperation in talent training, academic exchanges, etc.
The Ministry of Science and Technology from both China and South Africa signed the Agreement on Scientific and Technological Cooperation between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Government of the Republic of South Africa in 1999, the Memorandum of Understanding on Building China-South Africa Joint Research Centers in 2017, as well as the Action Plan on Building China-South Africa Joint Research Centersand the Memorandum of Understanding on Building China-South Africa Joint Forestry Research Center in 2018. It was agreed to work together to establish a China-South Africa Joint Forestry Research Center, with the implementing bodies of Eucalyptus Research and Development Center (re-named as the Research Institute of Fast-Growing Trees) of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration of China in China, the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute of the University of Pretoria in South Africa.
