The ASEAN Forestry Cooperation Research Center of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration was officially unveiled on November 18, 2016. The Research Center is established mainly relying on the Guangxi Academy of Forestry and the Experimental Center of Tropical Forestry of the Chinese Academy of Forestry. The Center aims to facilitate and implement forestry cooperation between China and ASEAN countries, also to serve and promote the sustainable development of regional forestry. Its main goal is to build a platform for forestry science and technology exchanges and cooperation between China and ASEAN countries, carry out technology introduction, collaborative research and development, and personnel training in the collection, preservation and utilization of forest germplasm resources, efficient cultivation and utilization of forest resources, and establish long-term and stable forestry exchanges and cooperation mechanisms with ASEAN countries to promote multilateral forestry development and industrial upgrading.

The main task of the Research Center is to collect excellent tropical and subtropical forest tree (flower) germplasm resources in southern China and ASEAN. Based on comprehensive evaluation, it aims to classify and preserve the excellent genetic resources, and strive to build tropical and subtropical forest (flower) germplasm gene bank, laying foundation for hybrid breeding and germplasm creation. At the same time, the Center also carries out cooperative research and promotion applications in related fields such as genetic improvement of forest trees (flowers), efficient cultivation of forest trees, processing and utilization of non-timber products, forest protection, coastal shelterbelts, and biogas utilization.
