Main work
During Prof. Zhang Zhonghe's current tenure, he mainly engaged in research on cochineal insects, Yunnan pine bark beetles, maca, etc. He has published one monograph (250000 words) and 13 papers as the first or corresponding author. He has obtained one invention patent (ranked first), one recognized achievement (ranked first), and two software copyrights (both ranked third).
The research on cochineal insects specifically includes several aspects: introduction, digestion and absorption, innovation, demonstration and promotion. In terms of introduction, in 2004, inspections were conducted on multiple origins of cochineal insects in Peru, and the cochineal insect species were successfully introduced. In terms of digestion and absorption, combined with literature and observational research, the morphology, classification, biology, and ecological characteristics of cochineal insects have been clarified. In terms of cultivation and innovation, multiple high-yield cultivation experiments of cochineal insects have been conducted in Lufeng, Yunnan. Through repeated experiments from multiple angles and methods, significant breakthroughs have been made in the cultivation technology of cochineal insects. The sixteen character policy of "moderate space, single row, reasonable rotation, and strengthened management" for high-yield cultivation of cochineal insects has been summarized, achieving the goals of high yield, high quality, and sustainable utilization of the host; the yield of cochineal insects has increased from 195 female adults per plant to 455 individuals per plant, while significantly reducing the cost of cultivation and solving the production technology bottleneck of cochineal insects. In terms of demonstration and promotion of cochineal insects, 300 acres of cochineal host cactus forest were planted at the Yunnan Lufeng Institute of Resource Insects, Chinese Academy of Forestry.
