Main work

Prof. Tian Xiaorui studied fire regime, fire danger forecasting, and fire effects for 20 years. He studied the forest fire regime in China and the impact of climate change on fire regime, and evaluated fire risks in the whole country and key regions under the future climate scenarios. Dr. Tian has published more than 100 papers in Chinese and English on forest fire research. He is a Fellow of Forest Fire Prevention Committee of China Forestry Society and serves as associate editor for International Journal of wildland Fire.

Prof. Tian Xiaorui proposed a forest fire risk indicator system and evaluation model based on the analysis of influencing factors on the fire occurrence and burned areas of China, and established a fire regime zoning system for the country. He and Dr. Cui constructed a burn probability model for Daxing' anling and assessed the impacts of climate   change on forest fires and effectiveness of improved fire management in Daxiang' anling. The influences of ENSO and climate change on forest fire risk and fire regime in China, were quantitatively described for the key forest areas in Northeast and Southwest China, and the results were adopted in the National Report. Two published papers were cited in the IPCC Report (Climate Change 2021).

In response to the current technological needs of the country in forest fire management, Prof. Tian Xiaorui made a lot of effort on quantitative assessment for fire risk. They evaluated fire risks in key forest areas and WUI areas and proposed mitigation measures and optimal allocations for firefighting resources. At present, he focuses on the   research of lightning fire prediction model and try to build a daily prediction system based on data of lightning, weather, and fuels. Risk assessment of fuels in areas prone to lightning fires and mountainous areas were also concerned. His group will explore the methods for reducing fire risk through fuel management. They will continue to study the impact of composite disasters of drought and fire events on on forest ecosystem at both global and regional scales.
