Main work

Wu Zhizhuang is a full professor at China National Bamboo Research Center. He has been the principle investigator or a team member of 15 research projects, funded by National Key Science and Technology  upporting Program, Special Forestry Projects for Public Welfare, National Natural Science Foundation, Zhejiang Provincial Natural Science Foundation, Zhejiang Provincial Department of Science and Technology, joint projects by Zhejiang Province and Chinese Academy of Forestry. He has obtained 6 science and technology achievements, and won 3rd prize of provincial scientific awards twice.

Prof. Wu Zhizhuang has contributed to 2 forestry industrial standards, obtained 6 national patents, and published more than 60 research papers and 1 book. His research focuses on two areas. 

  • Compound management of bamboo forest and medicinal plants cultivation. Medicinal plants with market potential, such as Tetrastigma hemsleyanum, Paris polyphylla, and Bletilla striata, were selected to establish "bamboo-medicine" compound management mode. Germplasm resources were collected and evaluated. A multi-purpose compound management technology system for ecological bamboo forest was formed. 4 elite provenances were selected and widely applied. 4 ha germplasm bank and propagation bases were established, along with over 30 ha standardized demonstrative cultivation bases.

  • Energy tree species selection and cultivation. A comprehensive assessment index system for energy bamboo species was proposed. 5 bamboo species were selected for energy-oriented utilization and more than 30 ha high-yield demonstrative cultivation bases were built. Based on resource inventory and commercial characters of energy plants, such as Pistacia chinensis, superior variations and individuals with features of high-yield, high oil production and strong stress resistance were identified. The geological variation of fruit oil contents was explained, and the protection and restoration methods for Pistacia chinensis populations in Qinling Mountain and Taihang Mountain were proposed. The technical standard for Pistacia chinensis propagation and cultivation was formulated, and more than 1,300 ha elite species propagation and high-yield cultivation bases were established in 13 provinces nationwide.
