Main work
Prof. Xu Bin has more than 25 years' research and field experience focusing on sustainable forest management and certification, forest governance and responsible forest product trade etc. He has led 60+ research and development projects cooperated with NFGA, DFID, EFI, TNC, IIED, FAO, WWF, WB, IKEA, IIED, etc. Totally 5 national forestry standards, 22 books and 60+ papers have been published as the key author.
As a pioneer in Forest Certification in China and key expert of China Forest Certification Scheme (CFCS) and international scheme FSC in China, Prof. Xu Bin had been intensively involved in national standards, technique documents and practical guideline developing, training and capacity building, pilot and extension on forest certification and etc., which led to the good practice of sustainable forest management in China. And social, economic and ecologic impact of forest management should be considered and prepared during the forest auditing based on the standards.
Prof. Xu Bin also addressed the issue of forest governance, illegal logging and associated trade in China's forest product supply chain working with the government and industry. He proposed the policy framework on legal wood administration in China and took part in the policy dialogue among China and partner countries. In 2017 he initiated China Responsible Forestry Trade and Investment Alliance (China RFA) which was approved as a national innovation alliance by NFGA in 2019 to promote responsible forest product trade. And the toolkit and on-line platform of wood legality due-diligence system were developed to help the industry meet the market demands and ensure the legal/responsible sourcing of wood products.
Now he is mainly involved in the ecologic governance research and practice in Yellow River under the national strategy which include the policy, technology and practical model using the integrated ecologic approach in the whole Yellow River basin.
As an international expert working with WWF, TNC, GTZ who is preferred by nature, etc., Prof. Xu Bin also took part in project evaluation, social and environmental impact assessment in the field, etc., and has much experience and skills in the area through the project implementation or project evaluation.
