Main work

Prof. Xu Jianmin was born on June 7, 1964, at Lufeng, Yunnan, P.R. China. He completed his Bachelor Degree in Forestry in 1986 at Southwest Forestry University. Since then, he worked in the Research Institute of Tropical Forestry (RITF), Chinese Academy of Forestry (CAF), where he earned his Ph.D. Degree in Forest Genetics and Breeding in 2003. He currently serves as a senior professor, doctoral supervisor, and the Chief Expert of Tree Improvement and Breeding at RITF, CAF. He is a member of the Standing Committee of Tree Genetic Breeding and Eucalyptus Professional Committee, Chinese Forestry Society, and Deputy Chairman of the Branch of Tree Genetics of Guangdong Forestry Society.

Prof. Xu Jianmin is known for introducing and improving eucalypt in China. His research interests include the eucalypt introduction, genetic material evaluation, seedling seed orchard, hybrid breeding, clonal propagation, and directional cultivation technology of high-yield pulp of eucalyptus. Since 2000, based on the successful introduction of eucalyptus in southern China, including Guangxi, Guangdong, Yunnan, Hainan and Fujian Provinces, Dr Xu strategized eucalyptus improvement and breeding plans for different ecological areas, and optimized the classification and quality evaluation technology system of eucalyptus pulp plantations. He determined the main cutting age of hybrid clone plantations of Eucalyptus urophylla × Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus urophylla × Eucalyptus tereticornis, and compiled the site index table of eucalyptus plantation in three regions. Based on this site classification system, a new cultivation model has been widely applied in southern China.

Since 1999, Prof. Xu Jianmin was appointed by the State Forestry Bureau as a national expert to assess and oversee in China Forestry Projects by World Bank. He has been actively engaging in project planning, approval assessment, promotion of achievement and technical consultation etc. Moreover, he was invited by World Bank to assess and instruct Project of Guangxi Comprehensive Forestry Development and Protection in 2004. To date, he has published more than 50 academic articles, formulated 1 technical regulation on management of eucalyptus high-yielding plantation in China, selected 4 excellent improved varieties of eucalyptus and 9 new varieties of eucalyptus hybrid, and won 3 invention patents. His significant contribution is exemplified by a series of honors and awards, including the Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, the Second Prize of Guangdong Science and Technology Progress Award and the two-time Second Prizes of Liang Xi Forestry Science & Technology Award, and the Outstanding Contribution Prize in Developing Eucalypts in China of Qi Shuxiong.
