Main work

Prof. Zhang Junpei has extensive experience in the breeding and cultivation of woody oil tree species, and he has conducted valuable researches on the practical application of related industrial issues.

In-depth research has been conducted by Prof. Zhang Junpei in the selection and precise allocation of walnut varieties,   seedling breeding techniques, variety identification techniques, and supporting cultivation techniques and other aspects. In terms of precise variety selection, 22 universal or specialized superior walnut varieties suitable for typical and distinctive ecological regions such as desert oases and Yungui Plateau have been screened. Additionally, 18 variety allocation schemes have been proposed, and a visualization information query and application system for walnut superior variety selection has been developed. Regarding efficient seedling propagation, studies have been conducted on greenhouse environment monitoring system for cutting propagation and inspection technology for cutting seedling maintenance. Intelligent   monitoring of environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity and light has been implemented, along with enhanced nutrient distribution through timely and appropriate foliar fertilization, enabling comprehensive regulation of seedling growth. A "one seedling and one code" supervision system has been established. In terms of efficient planting and   supporting cultivation techniques and demonstrations, key technologies such as efficient flower and fruit management, non-delayed planting of seedlings, crown reduction to promote fruiting, and disease and pest control using plant protection agents have been further improved. An integrated and standardized efficient production technology system has been developed in conjunction with the variety allocation schemes. A demonstration forest spanning 2,570 acres has been established for accurate application of superior varieties and efficient cultivation techniques. The average yield per acre has increased by 15%, commercial fruit rate has increased by 20%, and overall benefit has improved by over 10%, thus playing a crucial role in increasing income for farmers in mountainous areas and promoting rural revitalization with strong scientific and technological support.

Prof. Zhang Junpei has led over 10 projects funded by the National Key Research and Development Program and National Public Welfare Industry Special Projects, etc. He has published more than 100 papers in core journals such as Plant Biotechnology Journal, Plants, Scientia Silvae Sinicae, Chinese Bulletin of Botany, Journal of Fruit Science and other core journals. Additionally, he has obtained 7 invention patents, 3 utility model patents, and 15 software copyrights. He has also contributed to the development of 1 national standards, 10 forestry industry standards, 5 local standards and 7 association standards. He has been granted 10 new variety rights and has approved 3 national-level superior varieties and 18 provincial-level superior varieties. His achievements has been recognized with 2 second prize national scientific and technological progress awards, 2 second prize awards at the ministerial (provincial) level for scientific and technological progress awards, and 2 third prize awards. Furthermore, he has been honored with the title of "Most Outstanding Forestry and Grassland Technology Promoter" by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration of the People's Republic of China in 2023.
