Developed a new direction for ecological regeneration research on shelterbelt forest. Based on the interdisciplinary science such as shelterbelt forest, tree physiology, and forestry ecology etc., the growth process curves, water use characteristics and protective maturity ages of major shelterbelt tree species in northern China were studied. Environmental barrier mechanisms as well as key artificial measures to break through it during the treesregeneration process were analyzed, which supported developing a new direction for ecological regeneration of shelterbelts in arid areas.
