Main work

Prof. Fang Guigan is the chief scientist of the Chinese Academy of Forestry Science, the leading scientist in the pulp and paper discipline, of the National Key Research and Development Program, a member of the International Academy of Wood Science, a member of the International Committee of Distinguished Mechanical Pulp Scientists, and a professor of the UNESCO BIO-DEV.

Prof. Fang Guigan has presided over the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Key focus), the National Science and Technology Research Program from the Ninth Five-Year Plan to the Thirteenth Five-Year Plan (Support/Key R&D Program), the National Promotion Project of Forestry Science and Technology Achievements, the UNDP Project (High Yield Pulping Technology for Developing Countries), the European Union Fourth Framework Program, China-France/China-Australia/China-Malaysia cooperation, etc., totaling more than 50 international and domestic science and technology projects with funding of more than 130 million RMB. Professor Fang's group has established extensive cooperation between industry, academia and research with large domestic and foreign pulp and paper enterprises and research groups such as Andritz (Austria), Valmet (Finland), Taisheng Technology, Shangying International, Hunan Tiger Paper, Shandong Chenming, Shandong Huatai, Asia Pulp and Paper of Jinguang Group, Rongcheng Environmental Protection Technology, Jiangsu Jinwo, Zhenjiang Zhongfuema, etc., and completed various horizontal projects entrusted with research/service projects of more than 130 projects with contractual funding of more than 60 million RMB. Five technical achievements were selected as "100 national key promoted forestry (forestry and grass) scientific and technological achievements" in 2016, 2017 and 2020 respectively, including "Key technology for clean production of low-grade wood pulp with high yield", "energy-saving production technology and core equipment for chemical mechanical pulp of low-quality fiber raw materials", "technology for making cultural paper from poplar wood processing residues", "high-intensity wastewater treatment technology with high efficiency and low cost", and "industrialization technology of clean pulp production with high yield of forest residues". Breakthrough achievements have been made in the following aspects: 

  • key technology of high yield clean pulp;

  • independent development of key equipment of clean pulp;

  • key technology of low-cost treatment of paper industry wastewater;

  • high-value utilization technology of wood fiber biomass refining and component grading.

Prof. Fang Guigan has received numerous awards for his achievements, including the Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress (1st, 2019), the First Prize of Liang Xi Forestry Science and Technology (1st, 2016), and the Second Prize of Science and Technology Progress of China Light Industry Federation (1st, 2016). Special government allowance expert of the State Council (2020), the first-level candidate of "333 talent project" of the Organization Department of Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee (2021), the national forestry and grassland teaching teacher (2021), the "Top Ten Science and Technology Stars" of Nanjing (2021), "Golden Bridge Science and Technology" Award of China Technology Market Association (2020, second prize for individuals), "Cailun Science and Technology Award" (2020), Top Ten Artisans of Jiangsu Paper Industry (2018), Top 100 talents of Jiangsu Province for science and technology services (2017), National Outstanding Science and Technology Worker (2014), etc.
