Bamboo Research and Development Center

China National Bamboo Research Center (CBRC) is a national bamboo research institute co-founded by the former Ministry of Forestry and the People’s Government of Zhejiang Province in 1984. The International Forestry Science and Technology Training Center of National Forestry and Grassland Administration (NFGA) was established at the center in 2011.

With its strong commitment to serving China’s forestry development, the center has three missions, i. e., bamboo R&D, international training and cooperation for better implementation of conventions, and bamboo industrialization. The center is the only national level comprehensive research institution with corporate capacity in China specializing in basic and applied bamboo related research and it also serves as an important platform for international forestry convention implementation.

A number of research platforms are stationed at the center, including the Engineering Technology Research Center for Building and Decorating Materials of Bamboo of National Forestry and Grassland Administration, National Innovation Alliance for Bamboo Building and Decorating Materials, Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of High-efficient Bamboo Processing, and Research Station of Forest Eco-system in Hangzhou-Jiaxing-Huzhou Plain of Zhejiang Province. There are two experimental stations for bamboo cultivation, and one innovative demonstration station for high-efficient bamboo and wood utilization. An experimental station for new materials of bamboo building is under construction.

In order to tackle some pivotal and common issues in bamboo cultivation and processing in China, the center conducts a series of research activities in applied and strategic bamboo technology, which has provided substantial scientific support for China’s bamboo industry development. The center has offered bamboo technology demonstration and service in over 10 provinces in China. The research activities cover four main areas, i. e., oriented cultivation, bamboo timber utilization, soil ecology and bamboo shoot utilization. A burgeoning bamboo research team has been established. In recent years, the center has conducted more than 80 research projects at national, provincial and ministerial levels and has achieved 1 second prize of National Award on Science and Technology Progress and 6 awards at ministerial or provincial levels. More than 170 research scientific papers have been published and 67 are listed in SCI. Additionally, 32 patents have been obtained and four industrial standards have been finalized. Journal of Bamboo Research, published by the center, is the only scientific journal in the country focusing on bamboo R&D and is issued to over 50 countries.

As an important platform of international forestry convention implementation, the center has organized over 150 international training workshops since 1993. More than 4,200 participants from 111 countries have been trained at the center, including over 20 ministerial-level officials. Meanwhile, the center has been continuously conducting foreign aid technology cooperation with developing countries such as Rwanda and Brazil. The center’s international bamboo technology exchange and cooperation with dozens of countries, including USA, Germany, Japan, Uganda, Mexico, India and Vanuatu, have promoted global bamboo industry development, which significantly contribute to serving national diplomatic strategy, supporting forestry development and elevating China’s forestry profile worldwide.
