The Subtropical Forestry Experimental Center (SFEC), Chinese Academy of Forestry (CAF), was established in 1979 as a research and trial base for forestry in the central and northern subtropical regions of China.
Its main tasks include assembling and supporting technological achievements, establishing experimental and demonstration forests, conducting research on the collection, preservation, and utilization of germplasm resources primarily focused on oil tea, fir, pine, bamboo, and broad-leaved trees, breeding high-quality seeds, and conducting ecological system monitoring.
Over the past forty years, the center has undertaken and participated in over 300 projects, including national key technology research and development projects, the National Natural Science Foundation, the National Agricultural Science and Technology Achievement Transformation Fund, and international cooperation projects. It has been awarded 71 prizes for its achievements, including two first prizes of the National Award for Scientific and Technological Progress, seven second prizes awards, and more than 40 provincial and ministerial-level awards. The center has published more than 600 scientific papers, obtained 23 patents (including 11 invention patents), registered 25 software copyrights, identified 34 excellent varieties, and formulated 16 relevant standards. The center has introduced and cultivated over 1,100 species from 270 genera in 98 families of woody plants. With a collection of over 30,000 germplasm resources covering an area of more than 6,500hm2, the center has established about 25,000hm2 of research and demonstration forests.
