Established in 1958, the Harbin Research Institute of Forestry Machinery is a sub-department-level institution affiliated to the State Forestry and Grassland Administration and the Chinese Academy of Forestry. The institute also works as the "Research Center of Cold Temperate Forestry of Chinese Academy of Forestry" currently as the only national-level social welfare research institute in China that specializes in forest and grassland equipment and cold temperate forestry research.

The institute has the only national portable forestry machinery quality supervision and inspection center in the field of national forest and grassland equipment, the National Forestry and Grassland Administration Forestry Machinery Quality Inspection Center (Harbin), the National Forestry Machinery Standardization Technical Committee and other national quality inspection and standardization platforms. At the same time, the institute has 11 provincial and ministerial-level science and technology platforms such as key laboratories and engineering technology centers of the State Forestry and Grassland Administration. It publishes scientific and technological journals such as "Forestry Machinery and Woodworking Equipment" and "Journal of Temperate Forestry Research".
