Founded in 1960, the institute of chemical industry of forest products (ICIFP), Chinese academy of forestry (CAF), locates in Nanjing, Jiangsu province of China.
The main research of theinstitutecovers biomass energy, biomass chemicals, biomass based new materials, chemistry and utilization of bio-active components, integration of forest and papermaking, environment protection, chemistry and utilization of rosin, charcoal chemistry and engineering, chemical processing and utilization of plant-tannins and other forest resources, process control and equipment design, chemical engineering of forest products.
Theinstituteis a scientific research organization integrated with fundamental studies, applicable technologies innovation, new products development, chemical engineering and design of forest products processing. The institute also provides post-graduation programs such as: the doctoral degree program of chemical engineering of forest products; the master degree programs of chemical engineering of forest products, technique and engineering of light industry (pulping and paper-making science and engineering, bio-based materials and packaging engineering etc.); the professional master's program on materials and chemistry; the postdoctoral research station on forestry engineering. Since these programs initiated respectively from the year 1979, there were 172 doctorates, 378masters and 26 post-doctors, awarded with diploma and degree certificates, become the scientific and technological backbone in universities, institutions and industries of forest products, pulping and paper-making and others.
By 2022, there were 205 employees, including 197 scientific and technical personnel, among them, there are 32 research professors, 67 associate research professors and senior engineers. The main achievements include: two professors were elected as the academician of Chinese academy of engineering; four professors were entitled as fellows of the international academy of wood sciences; one professor entitled as Foreign Academician of Russian Academy of Natural Sciences; several experts and scholars have been qualified by national, provincial and ministerial levels and 14 distinctive science and technology innovation teams have been formed with reasonable age structures of talented personnel and their specialties.
There are several national, ministerial and provincial leveled academic and technical institutions and organizations attached or affiliated to this institute, including the national engineering research center of low-carbon processing and utilization of forest biomass (the National Development and Reform Commission), the national forest chemical engineering technology research center (Ministry of science and technology); international science & technology cooperation of efficient conversion and utilization of forestry biomass, industry technology innovation strategic alliance for biobased materials, international innovation center for forest chemicals and materials, the biomass energy research institute, the biomass energy engineering research center, the key laboratory of forest chemical engineering, and the activated carbon engineering technology research center, the technology information central station for chemical industry of forest products, of the state administration of forestry and grassland; the key laboratory of biomass energy and materials, the biomass energy and materials engineering technology research center of Jiangsu province; the pulp and papermaking research and development center of Chinese academy of forestry; national technical committee 558 on forest chemical products of standardization administration of China; the chemical industry of forest products branch of Chinese forestry society; the extractive utilization branch, the activated carbon branch of China forest products industry association; the adhesive technology association of Nanjing, the forest chemical products quality inspection center and so on.
Over the past more than 60 years, in total 1071 R&D projects funded by the central, ministerial and provincial governments were conducted; 727 science and technology achievements were obtained, among which 25 national awards and 94 provincial and ministerial awards were obtained; 798 patents patented; the science and technology achievements of the institute were transferred and extended to more than 300 enterprises in 27 provinces and cities throughout the country; a total of 65 international cooperation projects were conducted, and international technical exchanges and cooperation relationships have been established with more than 60 institutions from over 30 countries in the world; frequent visits between Chinese and foreign experts have been made.
