The Research Institute of Wood Industry (RIWI), Chinese Academy of Forestry (CAF), has a long history and a deep culture deposit. Its predecessor can be traced back to some outstanding modern biological, industrial and forestry scientific research institutes, including the Fan Memorial Institute of Biology established in 1928, the National Institute of Industrial Research established in 1930, the Central Forestry Experimental Institute established in 1941 and others.
Approved by The State Council, the institute officially was established on March 14, 1957. Integrating the wisdom and heritage of Chinese wood science pioneers such as Tang Yao, Zhu Huifang, Cheng Junqing and Wang Kai, the institute has become the national team and the national center of wood science and technology, and also the largest wood research institute in the world.
At present, the research field of the Institute contains wood structure and material properties, wood composite materials, Wood (bamboo) structure, wood protection, ancient wooden building, intelligent manufacturing, and so on. There is the wood specimen resource center of National Forestry and Grassland Administration with the largest collection in Asia. There is the first CITES Wildlife Forensic Testing Laboratory in China. There is also the only new sequence National Engineering Center of wood science and technology. And there is also the National Center of Inspection and Testing for wood-based Panels and wood-bamboo Products, the Technology Innovation Alliance of Wood/bamboo Industry and the Key Scientific Research Base of Wood Conservation in Ancient Architecture State Administration of Cultural Heritage.
