lnstitute of Highland Forest Science

Found in 1955, the Institute of Highland Forest Science (IHFS), Chinese Academy of Forestry (CAF), was formerly known as Yunnan Lac Workstation of the Chinese Academy of Forestry. The institute was renamed as the Institute of Resource Insects in 1988 and its current name on highlands in 2021.

At present, the institute is committed to promoting the development of forestry and grassland undertakings on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, carrying out research on forestry insect resources, forest and grassland resources cultivation and unique resources utilization, ecosystem protection and restoration, as well as biodiversity protection.


The institute comprises six research laboratories: industrial raw material insects, environmental insects, ecological restoration, forest cultivation, biotechnology, and forest chemical products. There are ten provincial and ministerial platforms in the institute, such as the key laboratory of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, the engineering center, the quality inspection center, the ecological positioning station (forest, desert, grassland), the national long-term scientific research base, and the national forest germplasm resources bank for long-term scientific research monitoring and essential research work. Also, the institute has four experimental bases belonging to the Chinese Academy of Forestry, covering an area of about 700hm2, mainly carrying out experimental research on collecting and preserving significant economic resources of insects and precious plant germplasm resources and ecological restoration.
