Research Institute of Forest Resource Information Techniques

Founded in 1984, the Institute of Forest Resource Information Techniques (IFRIT), Chinese Academy of Forestry (CAF), is a government-run, non-profit subsidiary research institute. The institutewas developedthe Research and Development Centre (RDCFC), an adjoined institution founded by combining the Forest Management Section and Calculation Center of the Chinese Academy of Forestry.

The main task of theinstituteis to solve the basic theoretical and key technical problems in investigation, monitoring, evaluation, management and decision-making of forestry and grassland resource related to ecological security and sustainable development to meet major national strategic needs and major scientific frontier issues of forestry and grassland resource development. The four research disciplines include forest management, cartography and geography information system, photogrammetry and remote sensing, and computer application technology. Currently, there are 88 staff, of which 66 have doctoral degree and 16 have Master’s degree including two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The instituteis authorized to grant doctoral and Master's degrees in Forest Management, with 13 Doctoral tutors and 12 Master tutors.

In recent years, the institutehas undertaken more than 500 key scientific and technological projects (topics) including National Science and Technology Major Project, “National Key Research and Development Program” and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The institutehas received 42 awards at the provincial and ministerial levels and 11 awards at the national level.

The institutehas four national innovation platforms, two ministerial-level key laboratories, two research centers of engineering technology, five innovation alliances. The facilitators of high-resolution remote sensing forestry application service platform, forestry and grassland science data center, immersive virtual reality system (the fifth in the world) has provided strong support for scientific research.
