Ecology and Nature Conservation Institute

The Ecology and Nature Conservation Institute (ENCI), Chinese Academy of Forestry (CAF) (World Heritage Conservation and Research Center of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration) has 133 employees, including 80 scientists with senior titles, 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. In the institute, there are 20 research groups working on forest ecology, forest protection, and wildlife conservation. The institute has 24 scientific research platforms such as National Observation and Research Station and Key Laboratory of National Forestry and Grassland Administration, of which 3 are national platforms. The institute mainly conducts scientific research in forest ecology, forest protection and wildlife conservation, and undertakes the construction, maintenance and management of scientific research platforms in related fields, as well as science popularization and publicity work.


Due mainly to the motivate mechanism that encourages outstanding scientists and technological talents, the institute has repeatedly won “National Advanced Collective Award for Outstanding Contribution to Ecological Construction”, “National Advanced Collective of Forestry System”, “National Advanced Collective for the Protection of Forest and Wildlife”, and other honorary titles. Nearly 50 personals have won all kinds of honorary titles such as “National Advanced Individual Award for Outstanding Contribution to Ecological Construction”, “National Advanced Individual for Forest Fire Prevention”, Provincial and Ministerial Reserve Candidates for “Millions of Talents Project”, “Millions of Talents of the State Forestry Administration”, “National Outstanding Professional and Technical Talents”, “National Excellent Forestry Scientists and Technicians”, “Outstanding Youth of Chinese Academy of Forestry”, etc.


So far, the institute has three authorized doctorate majors: ecology, forest protection, wildlife conservation and utilization, four authorized master degree majors: ecology, forest protection, wildlife conservation and utilization, botany and two postdoctoral research stations: ecology and forestry. About 140 postgraduates, doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, or visiting scholar participates in research and training at the institute each year.


Over the years, the institute has been active in international cooperation and exchanges. It has established cooperative relations with famous forestry institutions of 17 countries, regions and international organizations, and receives about 40 foreign experts for visits, investigations and project cooperation on average every year, and visits about 20 times. The research staff of the institute has held 21 international positions, including vice president, executive committee and coordinator of the International Union of Forestry Research Organization (IUFRO).
