Research Institute of Forestry

Founded in 1953, the Research Institute of Forestry (RIF), Chinese Academy of Forestry (CAF), is the earliest established research institute of the academy, which has a complete system of academic disciplines and a powerful research force.


The institute is a comprehensive non-profit research institute focusing on silviculture, tree genetics and breeding, forest ecosystem management and forest ecosystem engineering, with priorities in addressing major, fundamental and applicable scientific and academic problems with national and inter-regional impacts in the process of forestry development. RIF is the major institute in the national forestry system that undertakes national research and academic projects.


The institute now has 167 staff, including 48 researchers and 46 associate researchers. Of them, 135 have doctorate degrees and 26 with master degrees. The institute has nine disciplines qualified 14 doctorate programs and nine for master programs, and has 25 tutors for doctorate students and 24 for master program. The institute also has twonational-level scientists in the 21st Century Talent Program, 8 provincial-level scientists and two chief scientists of the Chinese Academy of Forestry.


The institute, since its founding, haswon 187 awards at different levels, including 39national level awards and 118 provincial (ministerial) level awards for research achievements. The national-level awards include one special prize for the National Award for Scientific and Technological Progress, three first prizes, 18 second prizes and 10 third prizes for the National Award for Scientific and Technological Progress, two second prizes and two third prizes for the National Award for Technical Invention respectively.
